  Delaware State University Director of Athletics Alecia Shield-Gadson has announced that Rod Milstead has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Hornets' football program, effective immediately. Milstead compiled a 17-33 overall record and a 7-18 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in five seasons as head coach of the Hornets. Delaware State was 5-6 overall and fourth in the six-team MEAC standings with a 2-3 conference record this past season. "We thank Coach Milstead for his service to our football program and the university the past five years and wish him well in his future endeavors," Shields-Gadson said. "The university will soon begin a national search for a new head football coach." Shields-Gadson also announced that veteran assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jeff Braxton will serve as interim head coach until further notice. - MEAC Football

  2022 MEAC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Marquis Gillis, Delaware State,...Gillis leads the Hornets and ranks fifth in the MEAC in rushing yards per game (49.5) and total rushings yards (545). His five rushing touchdowns are tied for fourth in the league.   C.J. Henry threw for three touchdowns, Marquis Gillis rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown, and Delaware State scored 28 unanswered points to beat Norfolk State 28-7 on Saturday. Henry had a touchdown pass in each of the first three quarters, opening with a 41-yarder to Jerrish Halsey. The duo also connected on a 22-yard TD early in the third for a 21-0 lead. Gillis capped the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown. Halsey finished with three catches for 77 yards and two scores for Delaware State (4-2, 1-0 MEAC). Otto Kuhns was 19 of 41 for 258 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Norfolk State (1-6, 1-1). The Spartans didn't enter the red zone until the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

  Coleon Williams recovered a fumbled Robert Morris punt in the end zone, allowing Delaware State to hold off the Colonials for a 14-9 non-conference win Saturday night. Defenses were dominant on both sides. Robert Morris was held to just 240 total yards; Delaware State managed just 115. Marquis Gillis broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run with 5:05 left in the first quarter, scoring the lone offensive touchdown for the Hornets (3-2). Jayson Jenkins capped an 11-play, 61-yard Robert Morris drive to end the first half, kicking a 38-yard field goal with :11 left. Delaware State's Matt Noll kicked a 50-yard punt that the Colonials' Parker Fetterman fumbled with 1:37 left in the third quarter and Williams recovered for the score to give the Hornets a 14-3 lead. Robert Morris drove 62 yards in 12 plays for a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Anthony Purge that pulled the Colonials within five points, 14-9, but the Hornets were able to run out the clock. - AP College Football

  Marquis Gillis ran for 86 yards and Delaware State broke open a close game with 17 points in the fourth quarter, defeating Division II-level Lincoln (PA) 34-0 in a season-opener on Saturday. The Hornets led 17-0 through three quarters before finishing strong with a Jared Lewis touchdown pass, a C.J. Henry touchdown run and a field goal by Nathan Wilson. Earlier, Wade Inge and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon had rushing touchdowns for Delaware State. The Hornets threw just 11 passes with Lewis going 4-of-8 passing for 87 yards. Delaware State had 43 carries for 215 yards. Lincoln's Isaiah Freeman was 12-of-19 passing for 130 yards.
